e. History of Development of School
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE YEARS
San Nicolas College in Surigao City
traces its roots to the year 1906 when the last group of Spanish Benedictine
Missionaries, who had worked zealously to have founded the Cartilla or Doctrina
School (which soon evolved into the Escuela Catolica de San Nicolas), with the
Religious of the Virgin Mary as administrators, vacated Surigao. Soon after
their departure, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Dutch
Fathers, succeeded them, created the parish of Surigao, and made the Escuela Catolica
de San Nicolas a parochial school which they renamed San Nicolas School.
EARLY BEGINNINGS
1915
The Bureau of Commerce issued Articles and Certificates of Incorporation to legitimize the school's existence. Rev. Adriano Muskins, MSC, parish priest and school head, expanded the primary school for the poor children of the parish who aimlessly roamed the streets. The school continued to grow, taking much time and attention from the parochial duties for the Dutch Fathers, who sought the assistance of others.
1926
Three Sisters from the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres arrived in Surigao in response to the invitation of Fr. Muskins to administer San Nicolas School. The pioneers were Sister Louise Marguerite Prevoust, Superior; Sr. Consolacion Cruz, Principal; and Sr. Valentine, who would take charge of the boarders. They were welcomed by the parish priest at the time, Rev. Juan Vrakking, MSC, who was to become the first bishop of Surigao in 1940.
1936
"The Little Flower Dormitory", a three-story reinforced concrete building completed in 1936, became the nucleus of the growing institution. It housed both the dormitory and the school. Sr. Adela Catalina Llorente, then, Superior, helped speed up the construction with donations solicited from her American friends.
1938
In June, the High School Department opened with Sr. Stella de Jesus Villanueva, SPC, as principal. Rev. Luis Boeren, MSC, took over as Director. The high school courses offered were Secondary Academic and Secondary Normal, to provide the mission with thoroughly trained Christian teachers. Initially, more than twenty female students enrolled.
Two years later, male students were accepted. Rec. Jose Croonen, MSC, was parish priest at the time.

1.2
Academic Support System
In the senior High school they go to
great lengths to make sure that each student has every oppurtinity so succeed.
Student who are experiencing academic difficulty, they should meet with their
teacher to discuss about their problem.
1.3
Teaching system
In General, Teaching system in St.
Paul University surigao Philippines focus of the curriculum, the transmission
of factual and procedural knowledge. The student should be active in every
classes. Before the teacher begin the new lesson, they should review about the
last topic. The teacher teach about the subject and the the student could
answer about the teacher question. It’s make the interaction between the
teacher and the students. In the last meeting, the student give evaluation to
the students and monitoring the students when they did their work.
1.4
Materials and other learning sources
St
Paul University Surigao, to provides materials to pupil is using Lesson Plan /
Daily Lesson Log, Supplementary Reading material, learners materials,
workbooks and they have learning sources such as : Projector, laptop,
fan, chalkboard.
1.5 Measurement and Evaluation System
Teacher evaluation
in senior high School affairs, all teacher are given SPM Score based. The
teacher give evaluations for the students and then the score in every questions
is 1. The teacher calculated all the evaluation and the school receives a
prorated score that incorporates data from the teacher. In the last of
semester, the school give them a reward.
1.6
Curriculum
Senior High school of st Paul University using Curriculum
K-12, it means that K = kindergarten, 6 years in Elementary ( 3 years in
primary and 3 years in intermediate), 4 years in Junior High School and 2 years
in Senior High. Which provide sufficient time for mastery concepts and skills,
develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education,
middle-level skil development, employment and entrepreneurship.
1.7
Teaching plan (of your major)
A teacher must not teach the pupil without the teaching
plan. The teaching plan in chemistry first a teacher must do the preliminary
activities like checking of attendance, drill for the lesson, review of the
past lesson, and motivation. After that,Presentation of the lesson is given by
the teacher through posing of the problem or any brainstorming to catch the
attention of the children. Then Discussion happened, Application, Fixing
skills, generalization, valuing and evaluation of the lesson to assess the
learners comprehension.
II. Pedagogical Contents
1.1
Teaching methods
In
the demonstration school of st Paul University surigao Philippines, for the
teaching methods the teacher uses expository method and sometimes the teacher
uses Discovery Learning and make the student more excited to find something new
and also the teacher gave some exercises to be done.
1.2 Learning materials and
innovation
The learning materials based on curriculum K-12, Teacher Guided
Books, Daily Lesson Log, Lesson Guide, and for innovation depends on teacher,
sometime teacher will use the different method and tehnique to teaching
different lesson and level.
1.3 Sources of
learning and technology
For
sources of learning the teachers at Senior High School st Paul University
Surigao are using K-12 curriculum, and the other sources is from subjects
book. Use learning media with technology such as projector, video, internet,
etc.
1.4 Authentic
assessment
For
the assessment, the teacher uses write assessment. Assessment consist of choose
an answer such as multiple choice, supplying answer aand description.
3. Teaching Plan
1.1 Curriculum
Curriculum in St Paul University surigao following
the rules of Republic Philippines, is Curriculum K-12, in kindergarten pupils
can studying during 1 years, in elementary pupils can studying during 6 years,
in junior high school pupils can studying during 4 years, in senior high school
pupils can studying during 2 years.
1.2
Teaching
plan Related
The
process of making a lesson plan by student teacher made through a manual
system. Before entering the learning process, the teacher are required to make
a lesson paln. Bellow is a lesson plan that has been created by student teacher

D. Elaborate
The student watching the video about colligative properties
of solution and explain about what they observed.
E. Evaluate
1. Calculate the boiling point
elevation and the frezzing point depression of a solution made by dissolving
22. 2 gram KCl in 45.0 gram of water. Kb=0.512◦C/m, Kf=
1.86 ◦C/m
2. Calculate the vapor pressure ∆P when 15.0 mL of glycerol
(C3H3O6) is added to 500 mililiter water at
50◦C. at this temperature the vapor
pressure of pure water is 92.5 torr and it’s density is 0.988 gram/mL The density
of water is 1.26 gram/mL
3. One gram of sucrose, molecular weight is 342 gram/mol is
dissolved in 500 mL at solution iat 25◦C. what is the osmotic pressure of the
solution we have?
F. Extend
The student will identify the advantages of colligative
properties of solution
THE MATERIALS
Colligative Properties that depend
only on the number of solute particles in solution and not to the
nature of particles. Colligative
properties of solution consist of :
1. Vapor – Pressure Lowering
2. Boiling point elevation
3. Freezing point depression
4. Osmotic pressure
The vapor pressure of a solution
containing a nonvolatile nonelectrolytes is always lower than the vapor
pressure of the pure solvent. The relationship between the vapor pressure of the solutio
and the vapor pressure of the solvent depends on the concentration of the
solute in the solution. The vapor pressure of a solvent over a solution
(Psolvent) is equal to the product of the vapor pressure of the pure solvent
(P◦solvent) and the mole
fraction of the solvent in the solution (Xsolvent). A
solution always boils at a higher temperature than the pure solvent. The
boiling point elevation is proporsional to the molality of the solution. A
solution always freezes at a lower temperature than the pure solvent The freezing
point depression is proportional to the molality of the solution. Osmosis is
the movement of solvet particles from a region of higher to a region of lower
concentration through a semipermeable membrane.
Osmotic pressure is the pressure that must be applied to prevent the net
flow of solvent.
IV. Observation on Teacher(s)
1.1 Planning for teaching
Teacher
always learning the material before she will teaching, choose the best tehnique
to teach them, provides picture or improved thing to give example for them,
preparing lesson plan based on K-12 Curriculum guide and teachers manual,
sometimes if she need showing powerpoint, she will bring projector from office.
1.2 Preparing lessons and material
The
lesson plan is ready for the first day of class. It must be a day to day
planning. The teacher did not make the lesson planning for a week inorder for
her to know if the lesson must reteach or move All the materials to use in the
lesson is made ahead of time. And the teacher do it at home.
In
making the materials the teacher makes sure that it will suite to the level of
the learners. It must be colorful and visible that can be seen even the last
person sittedat the back. Since the teacher is handling grade one level, the
materials to be use in teaching must be attractive.
1.3 Teaching in class
The
teacher used expository method or discussion and discovery learning when she
taught the students in the class but sometimes the teacher gave some
explanation.
1.4 Measurement and Evaluation
Evaluation
: In STEM 3, teacher lopez will give summative test every friday, the purpose
is to know the increasing of pupils, and every quarter the teacher will give
report to the parents, the name of report card is 138, and every quarter,
teacher will arrange rank of pupils, so the teacher know pupils who have great
intelligence, perfect attendance and will announcement at event.
V.
Teaching Practice
1.1
Procedures of teaching
First, the pupils in STEM always starting the lesson with
praying, and greeting.
1.2
Time management and organizing
activities
I
taught 22 hours include the final demo. Sometimes when teaching I spent more
time, 2 hours is not for me to teach all lesson, because in every meeting I
should teach them 2 subtopic. but sometimes I did it well
Time

Activities
|
07.45
|
Open
the lesson with greeting and praying
|
07.55
|
Starting
the lesson with asking student about material today, ex : material today
about electrolyte and non electrolyte solution, so I ask : what’s the meaning
of solution?
|
08.15
|
I
ask to them, do you know ice tea ? and would you like to description the ice
tea ? some pupils raise their hand ans answer : ice tea is one of solution.
The component include water and sugar. Water is solvent and sugar is solute.
When they mix each other it will be solution
|
08.35
|
I
made a demonstrate about solution and I ask them, are you understand ? they
said yes, okay let’s try. They can divede between solute and solvent. Okay I
give more question for them
|
08.
35
|
Okay,
I will make you to be group, 1 group consist of 4-5 pupils and they are
discussion about electrolyte and non electrolyte
|
09.00
|
I
give 5 questions to them and ask them to write in their notebook. I give them
30 minutes- 1 hour depends on the materials,
|
09.15
|
and
when they’re finished. I’ll check their task and give the score.
|
1.3 Problem-solving
Every lesson,I always give the problem to them,
example :
- I ask to them why oil and water can not mix each other while
sugar and water and sugar can mix each other? I ask them ‘would you like
to answer ?’
- - I ask to them’ why important
we learning about solution especially polar and non polar
- We must learning about polar and non
polar, because in our daily life we can see and explain some phenomena happened
according chemistry point of view. are you understood ?
- Yes, we’re understood.
1.4 Classroom management (pengelolaan
kelas)
I will handle the class for 2 hours every Monday and Tuesday
at STEM 2 And 3. On Wednesday – Friday I will handle the class for 4 hours
(Stem 2 and STEM 3)
VI Summary and Suggestions
1.1 Purposes of practicum
After
I joining SEA-teacher event and I going to Philippines, I know about several
habit in Philippines, like general transportation is jeepney, motorela, and
time to entrance the school is 07.30 o’clock (flag ceremony), and exactly,
after practicum, I know about :
Ø Principle in teaching, based on my
observation several teacher in St Paul University Surigao, one of them can
handle all pupils, and one of them can’t handle all pupils, I think the reason
is : first impression, technique teaching pupils, and deliver the lesson.
Ø How to get the student’s attention
to participating the lesson, so their friends will attractive also, and I
can deliver the lesson easily.
Ø How to choose the method in
teaching, when I teach chemistry, sometime I will using projector, improvised
things picture (english), video. So they will understand what topics that I
teach for them.
Ø How to develop the lesson, when the
pupils participate with me, I always ask them to “would you like to come
infront of?”, and several of them raising the hand, and of course I will
indicate them, and I also indicate pupils who not raising the hand, so all of
them can be participate in my demoteaching.
1.2 Procedures of practicum
For the teaching
procedure, it was same like my lesson plan such as introduction, review about previous
topic, main activities and closing. I taught STEM 2 and STEM 3 about saturated
solution and unsaturated solution, miscible and immiscible, electrolytes and
non electrolyte, chemical stoichiometry reaction, concentrations of units,
colligative properties of solution and factor affecting solubility. I had rule
for my class, if the student could answer my question, I will give them point
and in the last meeting I give them reward.
I explain the material through the
power point, I ask the students to answer the question on the board. I formed
them to the 4 – 5 group and I give them the subtopic and the should discuss
each other. After 10 minutes one of them presentation in front of the class.
The students could understand my lesson. I gave them individual test, and they
could answer the question correctly, they were so awesome…
1.3 Outcomes of practicum
· I know to
making lesson plan with Philippines Curriculum
· I know to
handle pupils in grade 12
· I know
method to get the participate of pupils
· I know how
to developing the lesson
1.4 The challenges of practicum
Actually, my first challenges is Pupils grade 12 is kindest, so when I came to
their class, they’re very good to me, they hug me and we take picture together.
The biggest challenges for me is I must handle all students and the amount of
student is very much More than 45 student for one class. I must have a Bigest
Voice to explain about material for them. I teaching in grade 12, and some of them can’t
speaking english, and they talking to me in besaya (mother tongue)
1.5 Overall impression
I always grateful for everything that happen to me,
when I starting to practice teaching in Senior High School of st Paul
University Surigao, I found many things that I can share to Indonesia,
specially in education system here, in Senior High School of st Paul University
Surigao, has commitment to teaching their pupils and deliver their pupils to be
better future.
Here description about my overall impression :
- The principal, the staff, the teacher have
commitment to dicipline, they always come early at 07.30 A.M because the rules of
the school that they must flag ceremony before enter to the classroom
- Senior High School of st Paul University
Surigao, is public school, so there is
no payment, but the facilitate is complete such as projector, fan inside
classroom, media, toilet inside classroom, trash every classroom, chalkboard,
sound system, screen power, etc.
- The teacher always accept pupils to
entrance the class although they’re late
- The method and tehnique of teaching
system, they always make stimulation first, asking the pupils based the
material, and they always engaging pupils when they’re studying to participate
and ask them to come in front of the class, after that sometime they give prize
for pupils who participate in lesson like candy, chocolate, snack.
1.6 Suggestions for future improvement
Actually, SHS of St Paul University surigao is very good, I get many good
theories, good experinces, good concept here, and I amazed with teaching system
here, and between The Principal, teacher, parent, pupils support each other.
But my suggestion for SHS of St Paul University surigao is avoid to hit table
with rattan when the pupils is very noisy, I know when pupils is very noisy
it’s very exhausted when we only talking to pupils to silent.
